Every house has a room like this. A place where extra chairs wait for another gathering, plants spend the winter, gifts from friends find a temporary home, and inherited pieces wait for the right room. Projects pause there. Boxes stay a little longer than expected. Mine slowly became a home for the things I wasn't quite ready to part with.

I always imagined it becoming a guest room. I just hadn't made the time. So one morning, everything came out. The furniture was moved. The plants found new homes. The walls were painted white, and then... I waited.

Before bringing anything back in, I wanted the room to breathe. Empty rooms ask better questions than full ones. Good design doesn't begin with what to add. It begins with what belongs.

Preparing this room wasn't really about decorating. It was about making space for someone else. Hospitality begins long before anyone knocks on the door. Sometimes it begins with an empty room and a little patience.

It turns out empty rooms can be surprisingly opinionated—if you're willing to listen.

Long before it became a guest room, this was the brightest room in the house. Morning light poured through the windows, and the mountains always seemed a little closer from here. That's probably why so many plants ended up here. They were simply chasing the light. I think they had the right idea.

Some jobs ask for particular music. Clearing a room is one of them. Bach has a way of making repetitive work feel almost meditative. Before long, I'm simply carrying one more chair. One more coat of paint. Every so often, an old photograph or note slows things down.

Once everything was gone, I resisted the urge to start shopping. I lived with the empty room for a few days instead. I watched the morning light move across the floor, noticed which views I wanted to preserve, and paid attention to how the space felt. The hardest part isn't carrying things out. It's deciding what deserves to come back in.
