hitchcock party — chapter 3
By the time Halloween arrived, the house was ready. The lights were glowing red, the ravens were watching, the food was made, and every room had a little Hitchcock lurking somewhere.
After weeks of planning, building, decorating, and cooking, there wasn't much left to do. We'd actually managed to get ahead of ourselves, which meant we could turn on the lights, put the soup and wassail out, and enjoy the evening instead of spending it running around the house.
We had no idea quite how many people would show up. The trick-or-treaters kept coming, friends filled the rooms, and before long the house was much livelier than we'd imagined.
The soup was a hit. The wassail kept flowing. And all those little details we'd spent so much time putting together finally had an audience. It was a little spooky, a little ridiculous, and a whole lot of fun. More than anything, it was good to see the house full of people.

01 — under the red lights
The house had taken on a life of its own. Red lights, shadows, ravens, and those little details we'd been collecting and building. It was one thing to see it coming together piece by piece. It was another to step back and see the whole thing finished.
02 — the luxury of being ready
Planning ahead paid off. The food was made, the decorations were up, and there was very little left to do when the evening arrived. We could actually sit down, have a drink, talk to our friends, and enjoy the party. A novel concept after weeks of preparation.
We expected friends, but we didn't quite expect the crowds of trick-or-treaters or quite so many people coming through the door. The soup disappeared, the wassail kept flowing, and the house filled up in the best possible way. All that work finally had a purpose: people enjoying it.
